Music, Memories, And The Brain Essay - 844 Words
When music plays as significant of a role in American society as it does today, many researchers focus their work on understanding the effects of music on the brain. In the podcast entitled Music, Memories, and the Brain, Steve Mencher interviews Dr. Petr Janata to find out more about how music is associated with human memories. Janata works in the psychology department at the University of California, in Davis, California. Janataââ¬â¢s research suggests that humans unintentionally store and create a soundtrack to their memories. Throughout the podcast, Mencher mainly focuses on Janataââ¬â¢s research. However, the podcast starts with Mencher asking Janata about his childhood. When Janata was a young boy, he learned how to play the piano. He was raised in a family that only listened to classical music. After establishing some of Janataââ¬â¢s background, Mencher asks about Janataââ¬â¢s research with birdsââ¬â¢ ability to sing. By monitoring the way that birds learn to sing, Janata is able to apply it to humanââ¬â¢s auditory system. Janata explains that birds are a good basis for humanââ¬â¢s auditory system because birds memorize their songs. Through studying birds, Janata is able to observe more about the learning process. They continue on to discuss evoked autobiographical memories. Evoked autobiographical memories occur when someone hears music and immediately associates it with a different memory as if they are experiencing it again.
